Retail heavyweight Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Thursday said the company will continue to use radio-frequency identification tags, or RFIDs, to track inventory.
The company started using RFIDs nearly two years ago on pallets and cases to track their progress through the supply chain and speed up replenishment of its inventory.
Speaking at a Wal-Mart information-technology conference, Rollin Ford, the company's new executive vice president and chief information officer, backed the use of RFID tags.
Ford said Wal-Mart will make EPC Gen 2 its standard for electronic tracking of merchandise and inventory. EPC Gen 2 is a faster, more secure technology used in the RFID system.
He also said he was impressed with UHF Gen 2 tracking tags specially produced for pharmaceuticals, which have lower costs and the capability to share information about merchandise between companies.
Ford took over as chief information officer on April 5 after Linda Dillman was promoted to executive vice president of risk management.
